Welcome to the Animal Control Division of the Grass Valley Police Department.  We are proud to provide service to the residents who reside in the city limits of Grass Valley and Nevada City. For non-emergent calls, please call 530-477-4630.  All calls requiring an Animal Control Officer should be directed to 530-265-7880.

Emergency services for injured and stray animals after hours is available by contacting Dispatch at (530) 265-7880.

If you have an address with three or four digits in Grass Valley or Nevada City you are in the City limits.  If you have a five digit address, contact Nevada County Animal Control at 530-265-7880 or 530-265-1471

Mission Statement

“The mission of the Animal Control Division of the Grass Valley Police Department is to provide quality services to the citizens of Grass Valley and Nevada City by providing protection for themselves and their property from the dangers and nuisances caused by stray animals, to protect pets from the cruelty they may face from irresponsible citizens, and to educate the public in the responsibilities of humane pet ownership, animal control, care, and welfare.”

About Animal Control

The Animal Control Division provides the cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City with the following services: pickup of stray dogs, injured or ill wildlife, bite cases investigations and reports, quarantines, animals at large, nuisance animals, and animal disturbance complaints. The Animal Control Division also operates the Grass Valley/Nevada City Animal Shelter.  We handle animal adoptions, animal relinquishments, Dog Licensing for Grass Valley City residents, and answering questions from callers and visitors.

The Grass Valley/Nevada City Animal Shelter hours are:   

Tuesday – Friday 11:00am – 4:30pm
Saturday – 11:30am – 4:30pm
