The purpose of the Traffic Congestion Relief Program (TCR) is to develop interim solutions to traffic congestion problems by providing cost effective solutions that can be implemented within a timely manner.

As of November 22nd six TCR projects were completed which have improved traffic flow at the following locations:

1) E. Main St. in front of the Post Office;
2) Berryhill Dr. /E. Main St.;
3) E. Main St. /Sierra College Dr.;
4) Idaho-Maryland Rd. /E. Main St. Intersection;
5) Dorsey Dr. /E. Main St.;
6) Idaho-Maryland Rd. /Centennial Dr. /Spring Hill Dr.

As the TCR program is a dynamic process, the Engineering Department welcomes suggestions from the public. Call Debbie at 274-4373.

East Main Street/Idaho Maryland Road Intersection Improvements Project

The Idaho-Maryland Rd./ E. Main St. intersection is fundamental to traffic patterns in northern Grass Valley and currently operates at a low Level of Service (LOS) during peak hour times. In conjunction with the Nevada County Transportation Commission (NCTC) and Caltrans, staff has developed a multi-phased action plan to help resolve the traffic constraints at this critical intersection.

  1. Interim Phase: restriping southbound East Main St. between Scandling Ave. and Idaho-Maryland Rd. to provide left turn, right turn and thru lanes.
  2. Short-Term Phase: the goal is to resolve the intersection issues without adversely affecting the substandard weave (Idaho-Maryland Rd. on-ramp and Bennett St. off ramp on southwest bound SR 20/49). Potentially, a single lane roundabout could reduce construction costs and accelerate implementation. Any proposed short term improvements would have to be approved by Caltrans and would be presented to the public and Council for consideration.
  3. Longer Term: The City is evaluating long-term alternatives developed to date in light of a potential short term project that may address the intersection problem. It is important to ensure any proposed long term solution is feasible.
