Animal Control
The Animal Control Division functions consist of maintaining the animal shelter, handling the sale of dog licenses, responding to calls and complaints regarding animal problems, transporting animals for impoundment and treatment to veterinarians, investigating animal control matters, issuing warning notices and citations, and assisting with the location of lost animals..

Grass Valley Animal Control is staffed by 2 officers and a supervisor that serve both Grass Valley and Nevada City. In the last 5 years, the calls for service have increased 14%. The number of citations issued has risen 40%.

The staff members at GV Animal Control make every effort to return animals to their respective owners or make them available for adoption. Of those animals that meet the adoption criteria, over 80% of them find new homes.

In response to continuing problems caused by barking dogs, the Grass Valley City Council recently agreed to a modification of the barking dog ordinance. As it existed, the ordinance was difficult to enforce and there was no provision for repeat offenders. This updated ordinance  now provides Police Officers and Animal Control Officers with a more effective tool to enforce these "quality-of-life" issues.

Should you have any questions about the Grass Valley Animal Control, please call the Animal Control Supervisor at 477-4630.
