HIGHLIGHTS>
The following is a list of noteworthy events and a sampling of incident responses for the month of August, 2007:
- A Firefighter off since 10/6/06 with a work-related illness returned to work August 1.
- 8/11: Batallion Chief Browning is assigned as a Division Supervisor to the Zaca 2 Fire in Santa Barbara County.
- 8/29: Under the Council-approved use agreement with the Roseville Fire Training Center, Grass Valley FD and Sacramento City FD used the tower facility to conduct a joint training on commercial roof ventilation.
On 8/8 @ 9:33 P.M. NCFD, NCCFD, and GVFD responded to fire in a coffee roasting business on Loma Rica Dr. At scene fire crews utilized a thermal imaging camera to detect heat in the ceiling and forced entry to find fire in a commercial coffee roaster and associated exhaust ducting. The fire was quickly contained prior to extension into the structure. It took crews approximately an hour to completely overhaul the fire once contained.
On 8/9 @ 1:52 A.M. GVFD responded to a medical for victims purposely struck by a vehicle on Neal St. At scene firefighters were informed by witnesses that two of the victims were at one point pinned by the vehicle but were now free. Emergency personnel assessed and treated three victims for minor injuries with only one requiring transport to SNMH for further evaluation.
On 8/9 @ 3:51 P.M. GVFD and NCCFD responded automatic aid to Penn Valley for a vegetation fire. At scene firefighters advanced hose lines and extinguished fire along the east flank of the burn. After helping mop up additional hot spots on the approximately two-acre fire Engine 1 returned to Grass Valley.
On 8/9 @ 6:08 P.M. GVFD and NCFD responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian on Nevada City Hwy. At scene personnel found the patient sitting on the curb with lacerations and a knee injury. Spinal injury precautions were taken prior to the patient being transported to SNMH.
On 8/10 @ 2:20 P.M. GVFD and NCCFD responded to a reported vegetation fire on Hwy 20 near the fairgrounds. At scene fire personnel reported a small fire mostly extinguished by passerby’s and started cutting a fire line around the burned area and mopped up hot spots to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
On 8/11 @ 10:00 P.M. GVFD and NCCFD responded to a hazardous material spill on Rough and Ready Hwy. Alerted by NCSO, fire personnel arrived at scene and worked with law enforcement to isolate and deny entry into the area of road where a unknown liquid spilled from a vehicle. Fire personnel then tested the substance and determined no threat as County roads personnel prepared for clean up under the supervision of Environmental Health officials.
On 8/20 @ 9:48 P.M. GVFD responded to a hazardous condition as a result of a natural gas leak inside of a home on West Main St. At scene occupants informed fire personnel that a strong smell of gas was present in the home. Investigating firefighters quickly found that a stove burner was left on and turned it off. Firefighters then assisted with ventilating the home prior to clearing the scene.
On 8/29 @ 2:14 P.M. GVFD responded to a vegetation fire on Hwy 49 near Empire St. The first arriving unit reported a small spot fire with slow rate of spread and no exposures threatened. The fire was extinguished quickly. Cause was determined to be a discarded cigarette butt.
On 8/31 @ 11:05 A.M. GVFD responded to an unconscious person at the fairgrounds. Witnesses stated that the patient lost consciousness and convulsed for a moment. Emergency personnel initiated patient assessment and care including administering oxygen. The patient was transported by ambulance to SNMH.

The following is a list of the highlights for the month August, 2007:
* Inspected vendors booths for “Thursday Night Farmers Market on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.
* Took vacation days off the 8th through the 13th.
* Provided fire safety awareness education to 22 City employees on the 6th.
* Provided “Duty Captain” coverage the 1st & 2nd and 24th through the 30th .
